As an ex-teacher and school guidance counsellor, Rurik McKaiser, managing director of The Phoenix Group has a passion for working with the youth. He dedicates much of his free time to an organisation called USIKO which deals with youth at risk and young people in conflict with the law (currently in the community of Jamestown outside Stellenbosch). The youth are taken through rites of passage programmes, giving them both the confidence and skills to become leaders in their communities. He also voluntarily offers of his time to The Mankind Project which is an organisation committed to empowering and supporting men in developing lives of integrity, accountability, and connection to feeling.
Rurik’s vision is to establish, with the assistance of USIKO and The Mankind Project, emotional literacy programmes for men on the Cape Flats.
The Phoenix Group also regularly donates to various charities and in 2006 it donated R20 000 to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital
